Community Christian Church of Marana

Not too long ago (Nov. 19), Dave, Monica and Noah celebrated their 2nd full year in Tucson, and Dave's 2nd full year as pastor of Community Christian Church of Marana. The church has a solid 50-year history in Marana. It planted the seeds, provided the property, and did alot of early work for what has become a thriving community medical center and a thriving community food bank, both located right next door to the church. It also started a day care about 30 years ago, and that has morphed into a Christian preschool that is owned and operated by the church.

A sign of the church's health when Dave arrived, however, was that there wasn't even one family who used the preschool during the weekday who worshiped there on Sundays. Membership had been slowly declining and aging, with an average worship attendance of about 30/week.

Two years later, thanks to a small handful of people who stuck with the church even in thin times, thanks to new blood, ideas, and energy, and thanks to God most of all, the church in 2008 has an average worship attendance of over 80/week, has moved to two worship services (it's a small chapel), and enjoys people of many ages and ethnicities together each week in Christ's name (including a few families from the preschool!). Indeed, only God could have made possible and brought together all that has happened there, way too much to go into with a short posting.

Dave (Monica and Noah, too) is particularly thankful that his mom and dad have become members there, and are quite active in the church's ministries.

At some point, if and when we figure it out, a few links to Dave's sermons will be posted. In the meantime, if you're in the area, we'd love to have you visit us - anytime, of course, but if you can stay over a Sunday it would be terrific!

Welcome to the Christmas edition of getting to know your friends. This is for those who I do not have e-mail addresses for. I would love your responses to these questions.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I love to wrap gifts, but if it's oddly shaped, I bag it
2. Real tree or Artificial? Unfortunately artificial. We used to get real, but something just does not feel right about shopping at a tree lot in your shorts since we moved to Arizona.
3. When do you put up the tree? Definitely after Thnaksgiving. We do no Christmas anything until after thanksgiving - we've got to give Thanksgiving a chance
4. When do you take the tree down? on Epiphany - January 6. Dave feels the official Christmas season starts on Dec. 25
5. Do you like eggnog? Yes, if it's in my latte

6. Favorite gift received as a child? A baby Alive - she actually ate and pooped. Why is that so fascinating as a child and then as parents we can't wait to get rid of the diapers?
7. Hardest person to buy for? Dave and his parents - they don't need or even want
8. Easiest person to buy for? Noah - he wants everything!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Four currently - I love them. One I painted, one my mother painted, one made of blocks for Noah to play with and one that was a gift
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Usually mail, but they never get done until the following Easter. This year we are going a different route - blog
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Nothing free is ever bad - you can always regift
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story (who doesn't love this one)
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Used to have all shopping done summer before, but am no longer that organized
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Christmas, birthday,... I always appreciate anything given to me, but if I won't use it, why let it go to waste?
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? A 9x13 pan of my mom's baklava!
16. Lights on the tree? and stair rail, and plants, and house and..
17. Favorite Christmas song? Do I have to pick just one? My Christmas Card to You by Partridge Family
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? We never have traveled far - just a few miles to parents house. This staying home and traveling the week after. Best of both worlds
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen - but do you recall, the most famous reindeer of all - Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer - had a very shiny...oh sorry, I got carried away
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star recently21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Always one present on Christmas Eve - usually pajamas
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Christmas stuff in the stores and commercials before Halloween!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Ornaments are supposed to have a theme?
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? my new favorite is sandwich fixins - I don't cook and it's Dave's favorite meal - it's become our new tradition since staying home for Christmas eve. It used to be my mom's lasagna - now we get it after Christmas - like I said, best of both worlds
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? Snow at Pine Top and to be with family (and to sleep on my back or stomach)
26. Who is most likely to respond to this? Everyone - right?!
27. Favorite Stand Out Christmas Memory – Past Christmas traditions that have changed since moving to Arizona. Our whole family used to go on a long shopping and sight-seeing weekend in Salt Lake City and stay at the Marriot Hotel connected to the mall. It was a great way to kick of the Christmas season. We all used to have a big sleepover at my parents house for Christmas eve and we were each in charge of leading some sort of activity for all of us to do that night. I really miss those years, but we have now started some great new traditions. We all meet in Pinetop, Arizona and stay at a cabin there for the week following Christmas day. We do our activities there together along with ski, sled and have a weeklong sleepover. Can't wait for it this year! And now I really love leaving the snow behind when we come home.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Love,
Monica

Hallmark family protrait

Don't we belong on a Christmas card?!

The Polar Express

Since I have moved here, I have heard talk of this fabulous activity near the Grand Canyon called the Polar Express. So, almost a year ago we made reservations to all ride this wonderful train and experience it for ourselves. At that time, the train was already booked for weekends, but we were able to get tickets for a Sunday night.

All of us (except Grammy - she was not able to go) drove to Williams. AZ - about a 4 1/2 hour trip - to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel. They served us a buffet dinner and then we boarded the train. On our 45 minute journey to the North Pole, we had hot chocolate and cookies and listened to the story of the Polar Express. At the North Pole we saw a village of lights and Santa got on the train. As we headed back to the depot, we sang Christmas carols and Santa gave every child a silver bell.

That night we stayed in the hotel and then were given a buffet breakfast in the morning. All in all, it was a fun event. I'm not sure that it's something I will have to do again for several years, but we had a good time. It was especially exciting for my nieces.

The Salt Lick

Diamond is a licker. She likes to lick everything: the shower door, people's noses, the crook of my arm, belly buttons, the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. But I thought this was the most hilarious thing for her to lick - my brother's bald head! We gave her quite awhile to see how long she would go and she did not stop on her own. Here is just a fragment of the time she spent cleaning his scalp. What is it that she's missing from her diet to make her want to lick all these strange things?

Happy Turkey Day

I have to preface this holiday with an explanation. As I mentioned earlier, my mother just had knee-replacement surgery, so the plan was to have Thanksgiving at her house, but only if she promised to not try to do anything and let the rest of us handle it all. I went up on Monday to help her and watch my nieces and to help get things together for the holiday.

When I got there, she informed us all that she had ordered Thanksgiving dinner from a local restaurant which I thought was an excellent idea since we have not had great luck with the turkey in past years and I am certainly not cook. She told us the restaurant would provide turkey breasts, stuffing, vegetables, mashed potatoes, yams, rolls, salad, gravy and pies. She then proceded to tell us all that she had bought a turkey to cook (so we would have the smell of turkey in the house on Thanksgiving), and that she needed to get ingredients for stuffing (to put inside the turkey she was going to cook), potatoes (because hers are the best) and for waldorf salad (which only my dad likes) and green bean casserole (because you can't have Thanksgiving without it). She also said that my sister-in-law would be baking homemade rolls because they are so much better.

Now, I would agree that she makes the most wonderful mashed potatoes, Heidi's rolls are excellent, the smell of turkey is nice and it just can't be called Thanksgiving without green bean casserole, but come on, aren't we defeating the purpose and being a little ridiculous?! First, why did we order it if we are going to still make it ourselves? Second, she promised not to do anything. And Third, who is going to eat all this food?

We were able to talk her out of the stuffing and the potatoes. We had to cook the turkey the night before because of limited refridgerator space, so we did not have the smell on Thanksgiving day after all. It did turn out perfectly, however, I'm sure because we didn't need it for dinner. I made green bean casserole, which is about the extent of my cooking abilities, very easy. And Heidi did bring her rolls. Grammy and Pop also came up from Tucson and brought ginzakraut with them - a traditional favorite of a few of us.

My mom still managed to weasel her way into the kitchen quite a bit that day, which I knew would happen. She just can't help herself from being involved and hated to be completely waited on. All in all, it was a very nice day. But after day 4 of leftovers, I was ready to be done with Thanksgiving for another year.

We played a pictionary game where we drew things we were thankful for. I am very thankful for all the usual things: family, good health, shelter, etc. But most of all, I am thankful that, especially in these hard economic times, we are fortunate enough to be able to help others. And, right now, I am very thankful that the temperature is in the 70's where I live! It really is the most wonderful time of year!

All grown up

Noah recently got a retainer that will hopefully widen his top and bottom pallets so that his adult teeth will have plenty of room to grow in. If successful, it will prevent his teeth from being crooked and keep him from needing braces later on.

I feel like this is such a big milestone and now he seems so grown up to me. He's no longer a little kid, he's old enough to take care of and wear a retainer. I'm not sure why I think this is so monumental. It's so fun to listen to him learn to talk again, although he doesn't think it's so great. He's especially mad that he can not whistle anymore - one of his greatest talents. However, he's determined to re-teach himself.

Now, if he can keep it from accidentally being thrown in the garbage he will truly make retainer history!

the Professional Circuit

Grammy and Pop have just gotten a new ping pong table added to the game room at their retirement home. Noah has already loved to go there where he can swim year round and play pool. Now, we all love the ping pong. As you can see, we will not be playing professionally anytime soon, but we are liking the practice!

Nothing on American West Heritage Festival

Noah's school field trips have really made me work on my very Type A personality. So far I have been on 2 out of 3 and neither one was organized to my liking. The first was to get a behind the scenes tour of the grocery store. It's shortcomings were mostly the tour leader's fault.
This last field trip was to an American History Festival in Queen Creek (near Phoenix). It was disappointing for many reasons. First, the teachers did not find out how long it would really take us to get there on a school bus and what they thought would take one hour ended up taking 2+ hours! So, by the time we got there, we had 1 1/2 hour to spend before having to get back on the bus and return home. Here are a few quick pictures I was able to get before having to leave. Second, it was not nearly as neat as the Heritage Festival held in Logan every fall. Noone else would have been disappointed by that except me, however. By the time we got back to the school, we all felt like we had been beat to death after riding on a school bus for four hours!
I guess if I am going to moan and groan, and if I plan on volunteering to go on the next trip, I better offer to help plan it. It's a learning opportunity for all of us. The teachers will know better for next time and I am learning that even when things are not planned to the very last detail, the kids generally still have a good time.

Beagle, Beagle, Beagle

My mother had knee surgery and the week she came home, my brother and his family went to a wedding in Utah, so they had to leave their dog. Since my mom was not able to care for her, Dave, Noah and I kept her for the week. It was the least we could do for all the times my mom and my brother have watched our dogs for us. She is a beagle named Beagle.
This dog evokes a love/hate relationship. She is the sweetest, most loving dog that I have ever met. And she loves to play. But she has the most painfully ear piercing bark/howl that I have ever heard. And she uses it whenever she is excited. She greets you with it when you come home, she uses it when she is playing and having fun and she uses it to warn of noises or anything outside. I wish I had it on video so everyone could hear how amazingly awful this sound is. I am always in awe of how such a horrible sound can come out of such a small creature.
Diamond also has a love/hate relationship with her Beagle cousin. She loves to run around and chase her, but she does not love to share any of her toys or food or humans or bed with her. Here is a rare moment when the two of them are actually being peaceful together.
Stodgy old Ginger acts as the fun monitor and is constantly barking at the two little ones when they are playing. So, as you can imagine, it is fairly chaotic when Beagle visits us.
I think by the end of the week, Beagle was glad to get back home and we were glad to get her back home.
We love you Beagle and will endure anytime you need to come visit us again.

Here is Dave giving them all their daily dose of medicine wrapped in cheese. They are intently watching as it is prepared.

A new Birthday Idea

I read in a magazine somewhere that instead of purchasing toys, books, etc. as presents for friends' birthdays, one family had started getting "time together" as a gift. So, I decided that I really liked that idea and the next birthday we went to was for Noah's friend Tyler. We wrote him a card telling him that we were going to take him to Kitt Peak Observatory to see their nighttime star gazing program and then he could spend the night afterward. The night was incredible - we saw som many amazing things, including a dying star, a whole other galaxy, the striations on Jupiter, Venus and it's moons!

I am so glad we have decided to start this new way of giving presents. It gave us the opportunity to spend time with Tyler and for Noah and Tyler to spend good time together. It also forced us to finally do something that we have been talking about doing since we moved to Tucson. I can't wait to get invited to the next birthday party!

Halloween at home

This was a big Halloween for Noah.
After our trip to Disney, we had more trick-or-treating at home.
First he helped carve pumpkins at his friend Tyler's house. They had a great time and did a great job.
Then he had a big party at school. His teacher had parents come and decorate the night before , so the room was all decked out to surprise the kids when they got there the next morning. They had a big feast and danced and went on a scavenger hunt and saw a magic show. I am amazed at all she does for her class.
Here he is on the actual night in the costume he really wanted. I don't know what he called himself - it was his own special design. He's the one with the skeleton hands and cobwebs hanging off him.

Excellent Student

I am so greatful to have such a good student for a son. I never have to fight with him about doing his homework and he takes it very seriously and works very hard at it, even though he really does not like it most of the time. He has had quite a rude awakening since starting at his new school this year. It has been a big challenge, which is the opposite of what he had at his previous school. He went from having a very easy 15 minutes of homework a night to having at least an hour of thought provoking work to do each night. He also went from having everything spelled out for him to now having many different subjects to keep up with and keeping a planner. It used to be easy for him to come home and do his homework on the kitchen table and then put it away in his backpack for the next day. Now, he has several books and workbooks to spread out and things that are ongoing for a week at a time - not just daily. So, to get him more organized, we bought him this desk and chair, which he picked out and bought accessories for and organized all by himself. He is very proud of his space and keeps it tidy and clean. With all the turmoil we had in the beginning and the hard changes he has made, he has managed to get straight A's thus far in school.

Noah, we are so very proud of you and all the work you have done and continue to do. You are such a responsible young man and Daddy and I really appreciate it.

Disneyworld again

We got back recently from Disneyworld in Florida. We went with another family (Jeff, Maria and Jeffery) that we hang with in Tucson and had a great time. While there, we attended Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. A special event held after the Magic Kingdom closes where you can dress up and trick-or-treat throughout the park while riding rides. We decided to all dress up like crash test dummies and it was a huge hit. We had people stopping us to take our picture or to ask if they could be in a picture with us. I felt like we were being chased by Disney paparazzi! Noah, of course, was not pleased because he so hates to have his picture taken, but he was a reall trooper and played along as best he could.

Here is something that got us all laughing really hard - maybe it's not that funny now. It was our last day of touring the parks, so maybe we were all just a little sleep deprived. It was at the animal Kingdom at a bird show and it is a bird that eats lizards. It kills them by taking them in its beak and beating them against a rock over and over and over and over again. This seems very un-Disneylike. In this video, it is using a rubber toy.

By the end of the trip, we came to two important realizations. First, we are done with Disneyland and World for awhile now. As much as I love it, having gone to one or the other 5 times since Noah was three, it has become less exciting and special. Noah's not exactly thrilled about Disney either. This was apparent when we were searching for a restroom for him and while doing so I asked him if he would like to see the Little Mermaid show? He replied " I would rather sit in the bathroom for the rest of the day than do that," in a very dry and serious voice. Maybe when the baby is five or so we can plan another trip (without Noah possibly). Second, we can no longer go an a vacation without the Kalitan family. Jeff has a way of getting things done that seemed impossible. For example, dining arrangements that typically need to be made months in advance, to name just one feat he accomplished. And Maria is the school health aid. So, when Noah banged his head quite hard on a statue outside of our hotel room, it was great to have her expertise available to make it better.

Again, my picture taking was really lacking in quantity and quality so there is not much to show here, I'm hoping that when the baby is born, something will trigger in me the ability to make better picture making decisions.

Noah and his Deedle Di

I went to wake Noah up for school today and this is what I found. Diamond was in heaven - she loves to cuddle and sleep with people and she is not allowed in mine and Dave's bed. Noah does not usually want her with him because he says she keeps him awake (he would sleep thru an earthquake). Maybe with the threat of a new baby, he's decided that he better have whatever family members he can get on his side. I hope this continues because it makes me smile and I think it's good for both of them. Noah said he slept all night, by the way.

Still just pretendig

I still feel like I am just pretending to be pregnant. We aren't really going to have a tiny newborn in our house again. I have not felt any movement yet, so I just feel like I am getting fat and pretending it's a baby. I remember so little about when I was pregnant with Noah so I have been doing a lot of reading. Some friends put together a surprise luncheon for me which was wonderful. But, again, it felt sort of surreal. Like it was not for me but someone else and I was there to celebrate with them.

Back row: Lisa, Denise, Blanca, Traden, Barb
Front row: Josie, Monica, Erica, Kimber

I just can't believe that I will be in a delivery room again. It's so strange to have diapers, a stroller and baby clothes lying around the house. I guess the sonogram picture should be proof that it's for real, but again, it could be someone elses. I hope it begins to feel real soon or I'm in for a huge shock in about 5 months!

Big News

We are going to have a baby! Noah took this picture of me - I am about 4 months along. It is due February 28th, 2009. I am getting more and more excited as the time goes, but am feeling this pregnancy much more than Noah's. I'm sure my age has alot to do with that. I feel too old to be doing this again.
Reality has not totally sunk in yet. I kind of feel like we are just pretending to try it out. We had been debating whether to have more children or not for a very long time and I am very glad that the decision has been finally made for us and we can get the question off our brains.
Noah says he wants to remain an only child, but at the same time, is always quite concerned that I am doing the right things for the baby.
It has been such a long time that we are learning it all over again. Many of the rules have changed in 8 years also. I would appreciate any tips anyone might know.

The cutest!

My wonderful, crazy mother did it again. Every year she takes the three cousins in to get a professional picture made. I think this years turned out the cutest! Here is just one. Thank you mom - I love them.

more Maui

This is the veiw from the backyard of the house - it's no wonder we spent a lot of time there.
Dave and Noah wading into the river in an area of rainforest.
Looking out over the black sand beach at a state park near Hana.

We spent one day on the big island, Hawaii, touring the volcanoes. The volcanic gas coming up from behind grandma, grandpa and Noah is from the vent hole created from an explosion of lava this past March.

Noah body surfing at the beach in Ka'anapoli

This is where the actual lava is flowing out of Mount Maouna Loa and landing in the sea. The hot lava hitting the cool water creates a geyser of rock, gas, steam and ash.

We did several other wonderful things in Hawaii, but have no record of them. As you know, I claim to be a scrapbooker but am not good at taking pictures - go figure. Well, my camera battery ran out of power about mid-way through our vacation and I had not had the forsight to pack it's charger. What a great scrapbook this vacation is going to make!

Anyway, we went snorkeling with fish and giant sea turtles, ate lots of wonderful tropical fruit - even picked our own pineapple on the plantation, went to a amazing aquarium, of course did some shopping, rode a speed boat that went 60 mph and lots of other activities. I did not want to leave paradise but was a little tired of eating fish and had to get home for the start of school. Although I do not have pictures, I will never forget the absolutely incredible place that Hawaii is.

12 days of paradise

We were all recently treated to a wonderful vacation on Maui, Hawaii for almost two weeks. My parents, Dave's parents, Dave, Noah and I all stayed in a gorgeous house in Lanai. Here are pictures of some the activities we enjoyed while there.

On our way

Pop made us pina coladas almost daily.

We swam, played badmitton, hung out in the hot tub, louged in the hammock, soaked in the sun, and made smores in the fire pit all overlooking the ocean in the back yard of the house.

Dave, Noah and Grandma went parasailing. They rose 800 feet into the air!

Time for Two

In July, my mother was wonderful enough to take Noah for a few days so that Dave and I could go somewhere alone together. No dogs, children or church. Unbelieveable! We decided to go to Sedona, AZ because we had heard so much about what a gorgeous place it is and its not too far - about 4 hours from Tucson. It was fabulous. We spent the time wandering around the rocks and taking in the scenery, lounging in bed in front of the tv (a real treat because we don't have a tv in the bedroom), and getting pampered with a massage. We even got to have a great Indian meal, something we do not get to do here in Tucson, especially with Noah. He is very sour on Indian food because we dragged him to Inda Oven in Logan at least twice a week. Even two years later, he still cringes at the mention of it. Dave and I savored every bite and gorged ourselves on it in Sedona. The time together was much needed, we should definitely do it again in another few years! We always say we need to do it more often, but life takes over and we don't make it to happen. Many, many thanks to my mom for forcing the issue. Parents do know best. I would highly recommend this as a destination for anyone in the area. We will be back for sure, maybe with Noah this time.
Here is some local wildlife

Up, Up and Away!

I had misplaced some pictures and just found them. Among them were these pictures of Noah and dave in a ballooning adventure this past May. They had gotten invited to help "chase" the balloons that go out every Saturday. This meant helping them get into the air and getting them put away after landing. So they got up before the crack of dawn one weekend and wnet to help. As luck would have it, someone who was going to ride did not show, so after quickly signing their lives away (leave it to a dad to allow this for his child), they got to go for a flight. Noah said he was amazed how quiet it was up in the sky. What an awesome experience! Now I wish I had agreed to go help. I am up for any exciting thrill, but the early morning scared me out of it. I guess the early birds do get the worm.
Here is Noah standing inside of the hot air balloon.
